Major Focus on Carbon Mitigation Opportunities at AFCC Conference
ResourceWise : Nov 19, '24
The Alternative Fuels and Chemicals Coalition (AFCC), an organization advocating for policies supporting the development of alternative fuels and chemicals, is holding its annual Global Biobased Economy Conference and Exhibit in Washington, D.C., from November 20-22.
This year’s conference centers on industrial biotechnology, particularly the development of a global, biobased economy and related technology. One hot topic within this broad subject area is the emerging market for carbon mitigation and removal.
ResourceWise is delighted to support the AFCC and its focus on the future of biofuels. We will be presenting a workshop on Friday, November 22 focusing on carbon mitigation: Assessing Opportunity in the Carbon Value Chain.
About the AFCC
The AFCC was established in January 2019 to support the development of public policies that promote alternative fuels, renewable chemicals, biobased products, and sustainable aviation fuels. The organization was formed to address gaps in advocacy and resource allocation for these industries. In particular, the group emphasizes developing pathways for legislation funding procurement to adopt and scale these developing technologies.
AFCC aims to bridge the "valley of death" in technology commercialization by supporting programs like the US Department of Energy's Title 17 loan guarantee. This legislation provides financing for first-time commercial projects using new or updated technology related to clean energy.
The organization’s annual conference brings together businesses, researchers, and policymakers from across the sector to collaborate on the most critical components of this developing field. This year’s focus, industrial biotechnology, highlights the key areas to scale and support a biobased economy on an international level.
The five primary educational subjects covered across all presentations, workshops, and sessions include:
- Biobased Manufacturing: Exploring renewable chemicals, bioplastics, and biomaterials for environmental sustainability
- Sustainable Feed Products, Feedstocks, and Biofuels: Strategies for decarbonization through food and feed products
- Advancements in Renewable Specialty Chemicals
- Innovations in Synthetic Biology, Alternative Proteins, and Regenerative Agriculture for Sustainable Food and Fiber Production
- Building the Biobased Economy: Developing Supply Chains with Materials End-of-Life Solutions, Recycling, and Biodegradable Products, Including Carbon Intensity Labeling for Informed Consumer Choices
ResourceWise’s Sponsored Workshop on Carbon Mitigation
Here are the details about our sponsored workshop on carbon mitigation value chain opportunities.
Title: Assessing Opportunity in the Carbon Value Chain
Date/Time: Friday, November 22, 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM
Moderator: Mat Stone, ResourceWise’s Vice President of Business Development and Low Carbon Fuels
The panel will explore value propositions within the emerging landscape of carbon mitigation and removal.
The panel is comprised of several industry experts:
- Heather Jones, Founder, Heather Jones Research
- Tim Lowrimore, President & CEO, Georgia Forestry Association
- Nancy Young, Chief Sustainability Officer, Gevo, Inc.
The panel will explore value propositions within the emerging landscape of carbon mitigation and removal.
The workshop will first assess the global economy's carbon mitigation challenges and discuss the difficulties carbon solutions face in aligning with diverse national accounting frameworks. The discussion will next evaluate the potential of establishing a floor price in biofuel markets and provide an economic outlook on supply and demand changes driven by 2025 legislative measures.
The panel will also examine several regulatory factors affecting decision-making:
- The 2025 Clean Fuel Producers Credit
- Revisions to the Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS)
- The expansion of state support, with insights from the US South
- RED III mandates for aviation and maritime sectors
Key focus areas include large-scale supply streams such as biogenic sequestration and e-fuels. Overall, the discussion will highlight the flexibility for early innovators and opportunities for firms aiming to consolidate and commoditize markets. This knowledge is vital to help businesses scale climate solutions to meet government and corporate standards.
