Wimbée and Koehler Paper, a division of the Koehler Group, have created a cardboard cap with a paper coating for aerosol cans. Wimbée crafted the cap's cardboard framework using Koehler Paper’s NexCoat Smart flexible packaging paper. The high fold-crack resistance of NexCoat Smart enhanced the laminating, shaping, and printing capabilities on the cardboard's surface while also minimizing its environmental footprint. Gmund Papier has collaborated with PAPER & TEA to create Tea Paper, crafted from tea residues. This product not only impresses with its visual appeal but also supports environmental sustainability. Riverside Natural Foods, a snack manufacturer, has introduced the MadeGood organic chewy granola bar in AmFiber's paper-based packaging. This new recyclable wrapper incorporates Amcor’s AmFiber, a paper-based laminate crafted from FSC-certified fiber. In comparison to conventional bar wraps, this packaging reduces virgin plastic usage by 77% and has been certified by Western Michigan University to meet the repulpability standards required for recycling. Paper Recycling Rate at 60% in South Africa
The South African pulp and paper industry remains a crucial component of the nation’s economy, supplying vital materials for packaging, printing, and hygiene products, as well as offering innovative alternatives to materials derived from fossil fuels. However, the sector is subject to fluctuations in market trends and economic conditions both locally and globally. Furthermore, challenges such as water supply limitations and power outages continue to impact its efficiency. The tissue manufacturing segment, which includes members of the Paper Manufacturers Association of South Africa (Pamsa), and independent tissue mills and converters, is currently facing a decline in production and consumption. The paper recycling rate for 2024 is projected at 60%, with 1.2 million tonnes of paper and paper packaging being redirected from landfills.
