At ResourceWise, we continuously strive to improve the tools and platforms that help our clients make informed decisions and adapt to the ever-changing demands of global markets. This year, we implemented significant trade data enhancements across several of our platforms. These enhancements are designed to provide our clients with the most accurate, timely, and actionable insights possible.
Overcoming Trade Data Challenges
Trade data has always been a cornerstone of market analysis, but its inherent challenges have often made it a problematic resource to leverage fully. Raw trade data, typically obtained from country datasets, can be inconsistent and hard to interpret. These issues stem from various factors, including differences in how countries report trade volumes, weights, and units and discrepancies in how commodities are categorized and classified.
For instance, in the forestry sector, some countries report wood products on a bone-dry basis, while others include moisture content in their weight measurements. This seemingly minor difference can lead to significant discrepancies in the data, making it difficult to draw accurate conclusions or make reliable comparisons. Additionally, trade data can be plagued by anomalies—such as reports of trade volumes that are exponentially higher than expected—caused by data entry errors or misreporting.
Recognizing these challenges, our team at ResourceWise set out to develop a solution that would not only clean and standardize trade data but also enhance its overall value for our customers.
Data in Harmony
To address the inconsistencies and anomalies inherent in trade data, we developed a series of systematic algorithms that now run behind the scenes across our platforms. These algorithms are the backbone of our data-cleaning process, enabling us to standardize trade data across different countries and commodities.
For example, our algorithms harmonize data reported in various units—such as cubic meters, kilograms, or short tons—ensuring that all trade data is presented in a consistent and comparable format. This process also extends to other critical factors, such as moisture content in wood products. By applying density factors and other conversion metrics, we can align data reported on a bone-dry basis with data that includes moisture, creating a more accurate and reliable dataset.
We also implemented a robust anomaly detection system that automatically identifies and corrects outliers in the data. Whether it's a trading volume much higher than it should be or a misreported transaction, our system can detect these issues and apply the necessary corrections. This level of precision is crucial for ensuring that the data our clients rely on is as trustworthy as possible.
Phased Implementation
This comprehensive approach to cleaning and standardizing trade data was not implemented overnight. It began as a phased rollout earlier this year, with enhancements being applied across multiple ResourceWise platforms that handle trade data. This strategic approach improved the quality of trade data across the board and set the stage for the next generation of data-driven insights in the forestry sector and beyond.
Bridging the Gap Between Raw Data and Actionable Market Insights
While clean trade data is essential, it's only part of the equation. One of the most significant enhancements we've made across our platforms is around pricing. Traditional methods of generating pricing data often rely on surveys from industry participants. This approach is prone to inaccuracies and bias as it depends on self-reported information from only a small number of participants.
At ResourceWise, we've taken a different approach. By combining our processed trade data with other complementary data sets, we've developed a sophisticated model that allows us to generate accurate pricing data that reflects real-time market conditions.
Our model uses the most recent trade data available and applies advanced methods to project current and future prices, improving timeliness and accuracy.

Expanding Capabilities Across Sectors
Our enhancements to trade data and pricing are not limited to a single sector or platform. The flexibility of our new pricing model allows us to adapt to different markets and provide our clients with the insights they need, regardless of the commodity they're tracking.
In the chemicals sector, for instance, we face similar challenges with trade data—such as discrepancies in how countries report volumes and units. By applying the same systematic algorithms that have proven effective in the forestry sector, we can bring a new level of reliability to trade data and pricing in the chemicals market.
Enhancing Supply and Demand Forecasting
By implementing these improvements across various platforms, we created a solid foundation of clean, reliable trade data to support the enhancements introduced in Forestat Global this August.
We made significant strides in forecasting supply and demand data within Forestat Global. Much like pricing, supply and demand data can be challenging to keep current, and traditional forecasting methods often fail to provide the timely insights our clients need.
To address this, we've applied similar techniques to our supply and demand forecasts, allowing us to provide more up-to-date projections. This enhancement ensures our customers can make informed decisions based on the latest market conditions rather than relying on outdated information.
Our new forecasting models account for various variables, allowing us to project supply and demand trends with greater accuracy. While supply and demand forecasting is inherently complex, our models provide a more data-driven approach that reduces uncertainty and enhances the overall reliability of our projections.
Delivering a Dynamic User Experience
With the recent trade data enhancements, we are also spotlighting the unique visualizations and advanced filters available in our platforms. These features provide powerful, dynamic ways to interact with data, enhancing the overall user experience and making insights even more accessible.

Geographic Trade Flow Maps
These maps provide a visual representation of trade flows across the globe, making it easier for users to identify trends, track commodity movements, and gain a deeper understanding of global supply chains. By visualizing data this way, we're helping our customers make sense of complex information and draw insights that might otherwise be missed.
Data Filtering System
Our enhanced filtering system allows users to easily navigate and analyze trade data, adjusting parameters to focus on the specific insights that matter most to them. Whether comparing trade volumes between top producers or analyzing unit pricing trends, our filters provide the flexibility and precision needed to conduct thorough market analysis.
Setting a New Standard in Market Intelligence
These improvements are more than technical upgrades—they reflect our commitment to providing the most accurate, timely, and actionable insights possible. We're excited about the potential to expand these capabilities, ensuring that ResourceWise remains the go-to resource for accurate and actionable market intelligence.
