Bio-Bunkering Growth Expands to Panama

Bio-Bunkering Growth Expands to Panama

The global adoption of biofuels in marine shipping continues to rise as stakeholders seek sustainable and regulatory-compliant solutions for reducing emissions. Monjasa, a prominent marine bunker supplier, recently announced the launch of bio-bunkering operations in Panama.

Panama has become the latest addition to the growing list of 35 countries that are now providing bio-bunkering. The strategic global positioning of Panama's port makes this adoption a significant step in expanding marine biofuel.

The Leading Hubs of Bio-Bunkering

Globally, the Netherlands and Singapore remain the frontrunners in the bio-bunker supply. Rotterdam and Singapore's ports alone account for bio-blend volumes of nearly 1.65 million tons annually. 500,000 of these tons are biofuel, which highlights these two hubs' majority stake in the bio-bunkering market.

According to a ResourceWise analyst report, multiple other ports have also shown promising growth within the biofuel landscape. For example, Hong Kong has delivered roughly 45,000 tons of bio-blends this year, and approximately 11,000 of those tons come from biofuels. Routine bio-bunkering operations are also gaining traction in the United Arab Emirates.

Emerging Markets and Their Challenges

These advancements highlight the rapid pace of bio-bunkering adoption globally. However, utilization remains a work in progress for many ports.

Areas like the Mediterranean are seeing sporadic demand without well-established, consistent numbers. Volumes have also occasionally shifted from established hubs like the Netherlands to emerging markets like Germany. And while activity in China is growing, it faces regulatory complexities that have slowed the process.

Many ports are still navigating the transition from trial-based operations to steady commercial volumes. Among the key barriers is the high cost of biodiesel in markets lacking a robust local supply network.

Additionally, the investment required to allocate storage and barge capacity for bio-bunker fuels poses a considerable hurdle. The main risk comes from moving forward without regular demand commitments.

Looking Ahead Through 2025

Down the line, both demand and infrastructure development for bio-bunkering are expected to grow this year. Marine biofuel demand is forecast to exceed 1.3 million tons.

This growth will be driven primarily by regulatory measures such as FuelEU and IMO Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) compliance. Additionally, stakeholders seeking greener solutions will also play a big part.

To meet this anticipated demand, ports across the world are preparing to expand their biofuel storage and delivery capabilities. These investments are crucial to the future of this market sector. Both capacity expansion and a strengthening of the supply networks will be necessary to make bio-bunkering a cost-effective and widely available marine fuel solution.

Panama's entry into bio-bunkering signals a positive step forward in the industry's ongoing adoption of sustainable marine fuel. Several challenges remain—ranging from cost pressures to infrastructure gaps. But the industry's trajectory points toward steady growth and broader accessibility over the next year and beyond.
