Klausner Lumber Mills: Progress Update

Construction on at least two of three lumber mills planned by the Klausner Group will soon be underway. The Suwanee Democrat has reported underground utilities are installed and construction is set to begin at the site near Live Oak in Suwannee County, Florida. County Administrator Randy Harris noted the general contractor is on site and will likely begin construction within the next month.

An update on construction at the site near Rowesville in Orangeburg County, South Carolina also became available. Quoted in The Times and Democrat, Klausner Trading USA President Thomas Mende said the company is working with the county to finalize agreements related to development and other similar issues. He expects the process will be complete by the end of February and to break ground at the site by year end.

Mende also confirmed development at the sites in Florida and North Carolina. However, his update is about all that is publicly known about progress of the mill in Enfield, Halifax County, North Carolina.

In July 2013, Halifax County received a $1.4 million grant from the US Commerce Department's Economic Development Administration to support the new mill. In September, it was reported the Halifax County Board of Commissioners had decided to hold additional funds for site preparation as costs had increased nearly $3 million above the $1.4 million commissioners had approved in May.

Each of the three planned mills is slated to produce upwards of 700 million board feet each year and employ 300-350 people. Capital investments are estimated at more than $100 million per mill.
